The Yukon Historical & Museums Association, Yukon Council of Archives and Yukon Archives are collaborating on a FREE public showing of rare archival Yukon images and films on Wednesday October 16, 7 – 9 pm in Whitehorse (doors will open 6:30 pm) 🎟🍿📽
📍Yukon Visitor Information Centre @ 100 Hanson Street, Whitehorse, YT
The program will feature images of people and places in the Southwest Yukon and northern B.C. shot by American writer Bill Albee, who undertook an adventure-filled walk from Lower Post to Frances Lake with his wife and two children in 1940. The Albees met and photographed a number of Kaska people and other residents near Lower Post, including Liard Tom, his wife Ada, and their children, who assisted them in preparing for their journey. The expedition was described in the May 1942 National Geographic Magazine. They also shot a film of their trip called Family Afoot in the Yukon, which will be shown at the event. The Albee’s youngest son Bob will speak about his parents’ northern journeys and current work with the Yukon Archives to preserve their archival records.
Yukon Archives will show a segment of Dr. Irving Snider’s 1939 16 mm colour film of his travels to Yukon communities, including Snag, Whitehorse, Teslin, Frances Lake, Ross River, Fort Selkirk, and Old Crow.
