STEP-21048-G ARCHIVAL ASSISTANT
TOURISM & CULTURE - YUKON ARCHIVES
The Archival Assistant will work over the summer of 2021 at Yukon Archives in Whitehorse. Located at Yukon Place next to Yukon University, the Yukon Archives provides access to Yukon‘s archival and publish documentary heritage through in person and online visits. The Yukon Archives Archival Assistant will work on two projects to improve the online and in person access to important historical records for the public. The projects will run simultaneously one carried out in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The first project is to review a selection of archival government files identified in the Yukon Archives report “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls: A Research Guide for the Yukon Archives” (2019) to determine public access to documents as per the exemptions set out in the ATIPP (Access To and Protection of Privacy) Act. Completing this vital process provides clarity for families and researchers as access and restrictions will have been determined in advance for these files which may contain information about family members or which revealed the impacts of colonialism in Yukon and Canada. The second project is the catalogue a selection of historic maps and plans from the Yukon Archives Holdings using the national standard, “Rules for Archival Description”, and entering these map catalogue descriptions into a database which provides online and in-person access to these important historical-geographical records. The student will work independently in a collaborative office environment and will demonstrate an awareness for appropriate professional behaviour, high attention to detail, and ability to manage time and tasks into projects and to use and improve their analytical skills in projects which require an ability to make decisions based on complex legislation and standards.
